Recruiting at Paisley Barracks
On 5 September 1914, the Paisley & Renfrewshire Gazette printed this letter to the Editor.
RECRUITING AT PAISLEY BARRACKS
Sir - Now that the Country is urgently appealing for men and the response in some quarters is all that could be desired, I am informed on good authority that the present arrangements for recruiting at the above (Paisley Barracks) are disgraceful, through want of sufficient officers.
Applicants are kept hanging about for hours awaiting an interview without result. This is a matter that should be remedied at once. Personally, I know a good many first-class men, some of whom have rendered service in defence of our country, who have lost a day's wages, awaiting an interview and have had to go home disappointed, vowing never to return until the present regrettable circumstances at the above recruiting barracks are removed.
