Many Lanarkshire men joined their local regiment The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles).

As in other parts of Scotland, the people of Lanarkshire answered the call to service and joined the war effort in many different ways.

Many Lanarkshire men joined the local regiment, The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles), which had 27 battalions during the First World War. Over 7,000 Cameronians lost their lives during the conflict. Although they disbanded in 1968 the regimental museum collection can still be seen at Low Parks Museum in Hamilton.

Lanarkshire's population not only served in the armed forces - as one of the main industrial centres of Scotland, for many the call to service was to remain in the mines, steel works and agriculture in order to keep the country, and the war effort, running.
